The Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society, a division of the largest society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research (INFORM), recognized Emeritus Professor Linus Schrage as a Distinguished Fellow. Schrage, who taught operations management and Research at the GSB, adds this honor to an already distinguished career.
In 1981, he developed the first optimization software widely used in education, LINDO. In 1985, he and a colleague introduced optimization in spreadsheets with the What’ s Best spreadsheet optimizer. What ’s Best received one of the annual “ Technical Excellence ” awards given by PC Magazine.
His paper on “Centralized Ordering Policies in a Multi-Warehouse System with Lead Times and Random Demand” with Gary Eppen, is frequently referenced as one of the early analyses of postponement in a supply chain. Schrage is the author of over 40 papers and books in the area of operations management. Some of his publications in the 1960s on optimal queue disciplines are still referenced today. Recent work has focused on supply chain management, optimization and mathematical programming.
