All alumni were invited to participate in the European Reunion in Barcelona February 25-27. The weekend began with a cocktail party at our campus building. Saturday morning featured a career assessment workshop planned by Bob Wilcox and Anita Brick, ’81, directors of the Office to Advance Career and Corporate Alliances. A lunch buffet was followed by two panel sessions that included GSB faculty and alumni. The evening was capped off by a late dinner at Can Travi Nou, a restaurant in a charming old farmhouse within the city. Sunday began with a brunch on campus and finished with a tour of the city.

Midway Club
October 29 marked the grand opening cocktail party for members of the Midway Club. The club has surpassed all of our expectations, and for that we can thank our outstanding architects, Lohan Associates. Stop by and see for yourself. With a little advance notice, Scott Graham, Midway Club manager, or I would love to give you a personal tour of the facility or even challenge you to a game of pool in our billiard room. For more information, contact Scott at scott.graham@gsb.uchicago.edu or (312) 464-8775. Read more about the club’s grand opening on page 4.

Did you know?
Most of you are aware that you can now access the alumni directory online, but did you know you can change your own information directly on the Web as well as by email, fax, or U.S. mail? In addition, you can enter additional information about yourself, including your functional expertise (current and previous); hobbies; concentrations and specializations at the GSB; past work experience; and how you landed your most recent position. When a critical mass of alumni fill out this information, it will make it easy to find fellow alumni to staff that new start-up or to recruit members for an alumni ski club in Wisconsin.

Earlier this year we announced that the Alumni Career Newsletter would be available to all GSB alumni online and free of charge. There has been a significant increase in the number of postings now submitted by employers and executive search firms. One firm alone submitted 150 $75,000 positions for November. High-tech postings and those from the West Coast have also increased substantially. The listings are updated twice weekly, and previous listings are archived for your information. Although we no longer produce a hard-copy newsletter, please contact our office if you are unsure of how to access the page or do not have Internet access. We will be happy to assist you on an individual basis.

Since 1996 the school has offered short, nondegree executive courses through the Executive Education office, making it easy to update your M.B.A. Some of the upcoming courses are finance for executives, marketing for nonmarketing managers, the entrepreneurial manager, enhancing leadership performance, negotiating and decision-making strategies for managers, and a new course on mergers and acquisitions that begins in April. Most of these courses are five days long. For more information, call (312) 464-8732.

Leadership Conference
In late October, 32 alumni club chapter leaders, roundtable coordinators, and class chairs converged in Chicago to attend a biennial conference for alumni leaders. They attended sessions on topics like using electronic media to building the ideal organization and had the opportunity to learn from one another’s successes and failures. The weekend kicked off with
a reception and dinner hosted by Dean Hamada and his wife, Anne, at the new Midway Club. Special thanks to Chicago club members Eric Chernik, ’97, and Jeff Gerns, ’90, for their session on membership recruitment and participation, and to Jeff Weinberger, ’86, from the Tech Venture Capital Network, for his presentation on organizational use of electronic communication.

New chapter presidents
We are delighted to welcome new club presidents Franco Castro, ’87, of the South Florida club; Judith Griffin, ’71, of the New York City club; Steve Ferris, XP-68 (’99), of the St. Louis club; and Jeff Kahn, ’85, of the Boston club. Read more about club activities on page 22.
