Getting Involved in the GSB

In my last column, I provided an overview of the programs and services currently offered to alumni. In this issue, I offer ways that you can involve yourself in the life of the school. For information on alumni programs, call 773.702.7727.

Alumni Clubs
Clubs provide a wide range of volunteer opportunities, from working on boards or committees to helping organize a single activity. Alumni may volunteer for community service projects or lend their expertise as speakers for club events.

Roundtables
Roundtables present an opportunity to interact with fellow alumni with specific areas of expertise or interest. Alumni may host a roundtable discussion, invite--or become--a speaker, and discover new ideas and solutions to business needs.

M.B.A. forums
Alumni worldwide are invited to represent the GSB at one-day events that feature several business schools. At these forums, alumni representatives share information with prospective students.

GSB Career Forums
Attend periodic GSB Career Forums to discuss career experiences and specific organizations and industries both with fellow alumni and current students.

Admissions receptions
Each fall, GSB receptions are held in more than 30 cities worldwide. These evening events provide an informal setting for applicants to speak with recent graduates.

Alumni career workshops
These workshops cover such strategic career continuation issues as conducting an effective job search and negotiating compensation.

International program students
Alumni may address students at the international business seminar series in Chicago. Alumni also are key in providing internship and career opportunities to international program students. For more information, contact the international programs office at 773.702.4499.

Alumni Ambassadors
Ambassadors advise fellow alumni who have moved to a new area on local community and business cultures.

Class officers
Class officers serve as the main liaison between their class and the GSB for class-specific events, networking, and news. If you graduated between 1995 and 2000, you may volunteer to work with class officers--or apply to be one yourself.

Alumni interviewing and recruiting events
Each year, alumni volunteers conduct about 2,000 admissions interviews as part of the application process. Each interview takes about an hour, and the interviewer completes a report that is placed in the applicant’s file. Alumni also are invited to attend periodic recruiting events to share their GSB experiences. For more information, contact the admissions office at 773.834.3281; the part-time and weekend programs at 312.464.8660; or the executive program at 312.464.8750.

Career coaching
Alumni are needed to conduct mock interviews, review resumes, and provide general career advice for first- and second-year students. Call the career services office at 773.702.7405 to learn more.

Corporate recruiting
Alumni may work within their own organizations to become a member of the GSB’s recruiting team. Companies with the highest level of alumni participation are also the most successful at recruiting from the school.

Chicago GSB Fund
Each year, the Chicago GSB Fund (formerly known as the Annual Fund) recruits approximately 130 alumni volunteers. Individuals make a one-year commitment and are needed at all donor levels. To contact the Chicago GSB Fund office, call 773.702.7548.

Distinguished Alumni Awards
Do you know a fellow GSB alumnus who has achieved a high level of success or acclaim as a corporate leader, entrepreneur, or public service leader? Nominate him or her for a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Alumni Career Networking Directory
This directory lists individuals worldwide who have expressed an interest in assisting fellow GSB alumni and part-time students with career information.

Industry Insight Alliance
Alumni are invited to be guest lecturers at Gleacher Center and locations outside Chicago, to write guest articles in career management publications, and to participate in online chat “appearances.” For information on career management for alumni and part-time students, contact the Office to Advance Career and Corporate Alliances (OACCA) at 312.464.8684.

Alumni speakers’ bureau
To draw on the pool of alumni expertise, OACCA is organizing a database of alumni, their areas of experience, geographical preferences, and desire and ability to speak to GSB and external audiences. This database will create opportunities for alumni to increase their visibility and sphere of influence.

Alumni compensation study
Determining your marketplace worth is a tedious and often futile proposition, especially if you are moving from city to city or function to function. To enable all alumni to value their experience and expertise, OACCA is embarking on a compensation study. Your input is essential.
