SHE NETWORKED HER WAY INTO HER OWN HIGH-TECH CONSULTING FIRM

It took Tam Dell ’Oro, ’89, eight months of networking–the interpersonal kind–to find the technology job she wanted. Today, she can tell you anything about industry data networking–the kind computers do.

It’s all in a day’s work for the founder of the Dell ’Oro Group, a firm specializing in business planning and strategic competitive analysis for the networking industry. The group provides quarterly reports on market size and share to a clientele which includes 3Com, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Compaq, Morgan Stanley, and more than 70 others.

Running a research and consulting firm isn’t what Dell ’Oro set out to do. After studying international relations and international business at the University of Santa Clara, she worked for Bechtel Construction Corporation and General Electric before enrolling as a full-time M.B.A. student.

Her interest was in the high technology industry, but most firms were looking for M.B.A.’s with engineering degrees. “I didn’t have a job after graduation.I packed my bags and moved home to California and started pounding the pavement.” She accepted a position with a University of Chicago graduate at SynOptics (now Bay Networks), a manufacturer of products that allowed computers to communicate with each other. Here she developed an approach to competitive analysis which evaluated the strategic performance of key companies within the industry. She later joined Dataquest, a market analysis firm.

As an industry analyst at Dataquest, she launched a quarterly market tracking service and met scores of people in the industry who wanted that information. A year after joining Dataquest, Dell ’Oro resigned and launched her market research business.

The Dell ’Oro Group surveys 75 technology manufacturers for product shipments every quarter and checks unit volumes with pricing, promotions, and published financials to verify consistency. The firm publishes six reports summarizing recent market events and technology trends for each of its two principal programs: one in the sector of shared hub and LAN switches and another on routers and remote access.
