Obama Gets Goolsbee’s Advice
Among Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s top economic advisors is Austan Goolsbee, Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics. According to Bloomberg, Goolsbee and two Harvard economists “form the core of Obama’s economic team.” Goolsbee was one of the planners behind Obama’s health care plan, unveiled in May. “We believe it to be a universal plan,” Goolsbee told the Chicago Sun-Times, adding that the plan addresses “the high unmet demand of people who want to buy health insurance.”
Bush Nominates Kroszner, Carlton
As the Wall Street Journal predicted in May, President Bush nominated Randall Kroszner to a full 14-year term on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Kroszner, professor of economics, joined the Fed in 2006 to fill an unexpired term that ends in January, making him eligible for a full term. Members who serve full terms cannot be renominated.
In addition, Bush nominated Dennis Carlton to the Council of Economic Advisers. Carlton, professor of economics, currently is deputy assistant attorney general for economic analysis in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
As of August 16, both nominations were pending Senate approval.
