MBA /AM in Middle Eastern Studies

Since its founding a century ago, The University of Chicago has been a leader in Middle Eastern scholarship through its renowned Oriental Institute and other programs of study.

The Middle Eastern Area Studies Program draws on this great tradition and allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the history, culture, politics, and languages of the region as a complement to their MBA education.

This program requires successful completion of an integrated master’s thesis and 28 courses; 13 of these courses are in Middle Eastern Studies.

Middle Eastern Studies Course Requirements

• Introduction to the Study of the Middle East (1 course)

  This course introduces students to the range of basic resources, methods, and analytical tools that must be mastered by those engaging in the study of the Middle East.

• Middle Eastern Survey (3 courses)

  Follow a three-quarter sequence choosing from Introduction to Islamic Civilization, Introduction to Judaic Civilization or the Islamic Middle East, 600 to the Present. Depending on prior work, students may be advised to substitute more advanced and specialized courses in the field.

• Electives (3 courses)

  Students choose two courses from a wide range of University offerings, including the humanities, social science disciplines, public policy, or law.

• Language Study (6 courses)

  Students study a Middle Eastern language for six consecutive quarters. All or part of the language requirement may be met through placement examinations; students excused from the language requirement may take additional electives.
