Jonathan Guryan

Jonathan Guryan conducts research that falls mainly into three categories. The first is education, including education policy interventions, the financing of public schools, and how students learn from each other in school. This research has earned him two National Science Foundation Grants, the most recent of which is for his project, "The Internet, Subsidies, and Public Schools." The second area of research focuses on race and discrimination in both school and the labor market. The third area focuses on lottery gambling and how people perceive randomness. With such a wide range of research, it's no surprise Guryan's work has been published in the Economics of Education Review, the Review of Economics and Statistics, Education Next, Perspectives on Work, and the American Economic Review.
Guryan is a faculty research fellow for the National Bureau of Economic Research and a faculty affiliate for the Population Research Center. He is also a referee for such publications as the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Public Economics, and the European Economic Review. His paper "The Impact of Internet Subsidies in Public Schools," written with Austan Goolsbee, was published in the Review of Economics and Statistics in May of 2006. He was a visiting fellow at Princeton University through June 2007.
He received a bachelor's degree cum laude in economics from Princeton University in 1996 and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000. He joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 2000.
Guryan enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and watching the Boston Red Sox.
