Jane L. Risen conducts research in the areas of judgment and decision making, belief formation, magical thinking, stereotyping and prejudice, and managing emotion. Her research has appeared in several notable publications, including "Looking Forward to Looking Backward: The Misprediction of Regret" with D. T. Gilbert, C. K. Morewedge, and T. D. Wilson in Psychological Science; "Target and Observer Differences in the Acceptance of Questionable Apologies" with T. Gilovich in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology; "Another Look At Why People Are Reluctant to Exchange Lottery Tickets" with T. Gilovich in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology; " Why people are reluctant to tempt fate," with T. Gilovich in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and "Informal Logical Fallacies" with T. Gilovich in Critical Thinking in Psychology.
She has made presentations at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Conference, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Midwestern Psychological Association, among others.
Risen's research has been featured in the New York Times , Washington Post, the APA Monitor, and Psychology Today." She is a member of the American Psychological Society, Midwestern Psychological Association, and Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
She is the recipient of a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation, a Sage Graduate Fellowship from Cornell, and a Humane Studies Fellowship from the Institute of Humane Studies. In addition to designing and teaching university-level courses in psychology, she designed and taught the science curriculum for the fifth-grade classes at the Casablanca American School in Morocco.
Risen received a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in psychology from Harvard University in 2001 and a PhD in social and personality psychology from Cornell University in 2007.
