Research by Professor Anil Kashyap on mortgage losses was featured on Page 2 of the March 1 edition. Mortgage losses could prompt banks and other lenders to shrink their lending and other assets by $2 trillion, Professor Kashyap’s research found. That could knock one to 1.5 percentage points off economic growth, the article said. The report was presented in New York at a conference organized by the GSB Initiative on Global Markets. “The study is one of the most exhaustive efforts to date to pinpoint the extent and impact of mortgage losses,” the newspaper said.

An article headlined “Chicago expands in Singapore” announced that the GSB is increasing its presence in Asia by building a larger campus in Singapore to replace our existing campus there. “Our new location in Tanglin Village will create and sustain a platform that advances the standard for management education throughout the world,” Dean Snyder said in the article. The new campus will contain space for expanded career services and alumni affairs activities, the February 28 article said.

GSB career services is increasing its focus on international opportunities for students, according to an article published February 8. As a result of aggressive efforts by its 22 staff members, GSB career services ranked #1 in the latest ranking by the newspaper. Associate Dean Julie Morton was quoted in the article.

An exclusive interview with Bill Gates at the GSB was published on the front page of the business section February 25. Gates, chairman of Microsoft, spent 30 minutes in the dean’s office following his speech to students. “What is the best technology for the poor?” he was asked during the interview. His answer: Vaccination from diseases. “When you’re looking at the poorest … a computer is not their most urgent need. …You need a schoolroom, you need a teacher who shows up, you need electricity,” Gates said.
